Tremella vs hyaluronic acid

The structural difference

Both are polysaccharides — long chains of sugar molecules that hold water. Hyaluronic acid is linear: one chain. The tremella polysaccharide is branched, and its molecule is smaller than the high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid used in most products.

Size is what decides where a humectant ends up. A large molecule stays on the surface, holding water against the skin. A smaller one sits in the upper layers of the skin instead. Both are useful; they are not the same thing, and a product that wants both effects needs more than one humectant.

An ingredient list is ordered by concentration. Position is therefore information: an ingredient at number 6 is present in a different order of magnitude from the same ingredient at number 22.
